Skin Care
The inward turning of the eyelid – most often the lower eyelid – entropion can damage the cornea and cause other symptoms when left untreated. If you’re in need of entropion repair surgery in Springfield, MA, contact Steven J. Covici, MD, FACS. Serving patients throughout Hampden County and the surrounding areas, Dr. Covici is an oculofacial plastic surgeon who specializes in eye plastic surgery, including entropion repairs.
What Is Entropion?
A medical term that describes the inward rotation of the eyelid, entropion occurs slowly and may not be noticeable in the early stages. With entropion, the eyelashes rub against the eye, which can cause redness, watery eyes, irritation and abrasions on the cornea. While entropion is common among the elderly, other causes may also trigger the condition, including:
- Loss of collagen and slackened eyelid muscles
- Congenital defects
- Chemical burns
- Eyelid surgeries
- Trachoma
- Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO)
- Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP)
Over time, eyelash movements can irritate the surface of the cornea and lead to eye infections, scarring of the eye and vision loss.
What to Expect
For the best outcome, entropion should be repaired before it has the chance to damage the cornea. The entropion repair procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient facility, like Dr. Covici’s oculofacial surgery center. In most cases, Dr. Covici will place stitches in the eyelid to tighten it and return it to an ideal position. The procedure takes about an hour to perform, and you’ll be able to go home the same day.
